The Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD) has issued a warning to the government, threatening to go on strike due to the lack of response to their request for a stipend increase. Despite their long working hours of 24 to 48 hours without breaks, the doctors argue that their current stipend is insufficient.
Press Release Highlights
In a recent press release, KARD expressed frustration over the government’s prolonged silence on their stipend hike proposal. The association emphasized that despite submitting numerous memoranda, no action has been taken to address their financial concerns. This inaction has led to significant financial, professional, and personal stress for the resident doctors, adversely affecting patient care.
Comparison with Neighboring States
KARD members pointed out that in some neighboring states, stipends are increased annually or every three years. In contrast, the stipend in Karnataka remains comparatively low. They also highlighted that the fees for undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in Karnataka are high, adding to their financial burden.
Previous Stipend Increase and Current Demands
The Karnataka government last increased the stipend in 2020. Although the association has not specified the dates for the potential protest, they have urged the government to take swift action to avoid inconveniences for the public at hospitals. “We regret any inconvenience to patients but believe this protest is necessary to ensure our voice is heard. We hope this prompts immediate action from the authorities,” the association stated.
Government Response
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged that a salary hike would cost an additional Rs 20,208 crore. The resident doctors remain hopeful that their protest will lead to a positive and timely response from the government.
