BREAKING: NEET-UG 2024 Controversy – Supreme Court Directs NTA for Centre-Wise Results

The Supreme Court has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to publish the marks of all students who appeared for NEET-UG 2024 on their website, sorted by city and examination centre. This publication must ensure the anonymity of the students by masking their identities. The NTA has been given a deadline until Saturday noon to complete this task.

Background of the Case

This directive came as a response to multiple petitions seeking the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 exam due to allegations of a paper leak and other malpractices. The petitions were heard by a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

Petitioners’ Concerns and Court’s Observations

The petitioners legal representative, Senior Advocate Narender Hooda, argued that the candidates were disadvantaged because the NTA had not published the comprehensive results, which hindered their ability to understand the centre-wise marking pattern. This lack of information was exacerbated by the absence of a shared CBI status report.

Court’s Order for Transparency

In response, the Court emphasized the need for transparency and ordered the NTA to publish the results with masked student identities. This approach aims to clarify whether the paper leak is confined to specific centres or widespread.

Privacy Concerns and Adjustments

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised concerns about student privacy, but the Court suggested using dummy roll numbers to protect identities. Initially, the NTA was directed to release the results by Friday 5 PM, but upon request for additional time, the deadline is extended to Saturday.

Continuing Developments

The Court has scheduled the next hearing for Monday to further address the issues raised by the petitioners. The case, VANSHIKA YADAV versus UNION OF INDIA AND ORS., W.P.(C) No. 335/2024, remains under scrutiny, with the Supreme Court aiming to ensure fairness and transparency in the examination process.
