Doctors’ Drug Scam: Major Update in RGHS Cancer Fraud – Rajasthan High Court Orders Investigation into Doctors’ Roles

In a major development in the multimillion-rupee cancer drug scam under the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS), the Rajasthan High Court has highlighted the likelihood of collusion between pharmacists and doctors. The court has mandated a thorough investigation into the involvement of the doctors.

Scam Involves Medipulse Hospital and Multiple Healthcare Providers

The scam, which has implicated both public and private healthcare providers, including Medipulse Hospital, has been under scrutiny for several months. Dr. Vinay Vyas and other doctors from AIIMS and various hospitals are now being investigated under the supervision of the DIG of the Special Operations Group (SOG).

Initial Investigation Focused on Jhunwar Medical

The police initially concentrated their investigation on Jhunwar Medical and its operators, Jugal Jhunwar and his son Tushar Jhunwar, following the first report of the scam eight months ago at the Basni Police Station. Despite comprehensive investigations by the police, cybercrime unit, and SOG, doctors were not implicated until now.

Discovery of Fraudulent Activities

The case began to unfold in September 2023 when Dr. Abhishek Singh Kilk, Joint Project Director of RGHS, filed a report revealing fraudulent activities involving the continuous prescription of expensive cancer medications from the Jhunwar Medical store at Jalori Gate, Jodhpur. It was found that a beneficiary, Mohan Kanwar, who was undergoing treatment for breast cancer at Medipulse Hospital, was purchasing drugs exclusively from Jhunwar Medical.

Shocking Discrepancies in Drug Pricing

During the investigations, the police uncovered significant discrepancies in the drug stock at Jhunwar Medical. Drugs with a maximum retail price (MRP) of 25,000 INR were being sold for 25 INR, while others valued at 2 INR were priced at 100,000 INR. These startling findings led to further examination of over 100 RGHS products, revealing substantial mismatches in pricing and stock levels.

The next court hearing is set for July 1, where further actions and investigations into this extensive scam will be discussed.
