The National Medical Commission has issued a fresh notification on 23rd August, 2023 by holding the previous notification called National Medical Commission Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations, 2023 in abeyance with immediate effect.
With this sudden development, the recently introduced controversial provision making the failure of the doctors to prescribe generic medicines liable for disciplinary action will not be enforced.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has recently written to Union Health Minister seeking withdrawal of NMC regulations on mandatory prescription of generic drugs till there is quality assurance of all medicines.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) in its ‘Regulations relating to Professional Conduct of Registered Medical Practitioners’ stated that all doctors must prescribe generic drugs, failing which they will be penalised and their license to practice may also be suspended for a period.
