PG Medical Student’s Brutal Rape and Murder on College Campus: PIL Filed in Calcutta High Court, Faulty State Police Probe Alleged

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Calcutta High Court concerning the brutal rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student. The student was discovered dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, where she had been resting after completing her night shift.

Incident Details

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of August 9th, when the student was found in a grievous condition in the college’s seminar hall. She had gone there to rest after finishing her night duty.

Faulty Investigation Claims

Following the discovery, the Kolkata Police arrested a ‘civic volunteer’ associated with the local police force. However, the arrest has been criticized as a cover-up, with the petitioner’s counsel alleging that the state police’s investigation was flawed. The counsel argued that the accused is being used as a scapegoat to obscure the true facts of the case.

Court Proceedings

The PIL was mentioned before a division bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya. The bench was urged by the counsel to take up the matter suo moto and consider transferring the investigation to a central agency, given the alleged lapses in the state police’s probe. The court has scheduled the hearing for August 13th and assured that all concerns will be addressed.

Request to Avoid Multiplicity of Litigation

In the proceedings, the bench also advised the counsel to avoid multiple litigations on the same issue, signaling that the court intends to hear all related matters comprehensively.
